First-time visitors to Thailand are often stunned at the surreal beauty of the beaches and coastline of this tropical paradise. The beaches in this country are truly a movie come to life and Samui Island (Koh Samui) is among the most fabled locations in the country for its white sand beaches, coconut trees, and sparkling emerald waters.
No matter where you go on Samui, you will see lush jungle, gorgeous greenery and flowers, and incredible beaches. But not all beaches are created equal! Locals know (and you’re about to find out) that five beaches on Samui Island truly stand out.
Here are the top five beaches on Samui Island in no particular order. Visit one or visit them all. You’ll regret nothing!
1. Crystal Beach
Crystal Beach (AKA Silver Beach or Thongtakien Beach) is a secret spot, and only the most in-the-know tend to go there. (You’re welcome!) True to its name, Crystal Beach dazzles visitors with its clear, sparkling waters. This 250-metre-long white sand beach, framed by palms and a backdrop of green hills, is known for the large stones that dot its shore. Tucked away on the island’s northeastern coast, this secluded gem offers a tranquil escape from the bustling crowds. Snorkelers will love the opportunity to explore the vibrant marine life thriving beneath the surface. Crystal Beach is incredible for sunrises, and as the sun sets, the water displays beautiful hues of orange and pink.
2. Lamai Beach
Venture to the southeastern coast, and you’ll find Lamai Beach, a vibrant and popular beach with awesome waterfront bars in a gorgeous natural setting. Definitely one of the island’s most popular beaches, Lamai has a lively ambiance but retains its unspoiled charm thanks to dedicated caretaking by the islanders. Here, visitors can take in the sun, play water sports, take strolls along the palm-fringed shoreline, or indulge in the array of beachfront restaurants and bars for a taste of the local cuisine and vibrant nightlife. Lamai is the best beach for families as it has all the daytime action of Chewang but with fewer bars.
3. BangRak Beach
Known for its stunning views and serene atmosphere, BangRak Beach, also referred to as “Big Buddha Beach,” is a peaceful retreat on the northern coast. The iconic Big Buddha statue stands majestically in the background, adding cultural significance to this picturesque hangout. Visitors can take in panoramic views of nearby islands and watch the traditional long-tail boats gently coasting by in the azure waters. The tranquil setting and gentle waves make it an excellent spot for swimming and unwinding amidst the island’s natural beauty. BangRak is a favorite of ex-pats. There are fewer tourists around and lots of cheap local restaurants and activities.
4. Mae Nam Beach
Nestled on the northern coast, Mae Nam Beach is among the more laid-back and unassuming vibes to be found on Samui. It is also Koh Samui’s secluded base for the rich and famous visitors to the island. With coconut palms and casuarina trees swaying in the background and calm seas, this idyllic haven offers a sense of seclusion. The shallow waters and gentle tides make it perfect for families seeking a safe and relaxing environment. Mae Nam also hosts a weekly “Walking Street” market where visitors can experience the local culture, sampling delicious street food and picking up unique souvenirs.
5. Chewang Noi Beach (not Chewang)
Last but not certainly not least, Chewang Noi Beach, an archetypal paradise located on the bustling eastern coast, captures the essence of tropical bliss.
Most newcomers to Koh Samui will have heard of Chewang Beach. Chewang is the main drag and the center of all the action on the island. Once a pristine, sprawling beach, it is now full of bars, restaurants, water sports, and vendors. It can be a ton of fun if you’re looking for the energy of the crowds, but it can be hard to see the beauty now due to all the noise, clutter, and trash.
We prefer Chewang Noi.
“Noi” in Thai means young or young child (so Chewang Noi is Chewang’s younger, smaller sibling). It is located next to Chewang and has lots of beach clubs and activities, but is not overrun like Chewang. It offers an expansive stretch of soft sands and invites visitors to indulge in sunbathing, beach volleyball, massage, dancing, dining, cocktails by the water, or simply unwind with a book under the shade of swaying palms. The vibrant coral reefs just offshore give snorkelers and divers an incredible opportunity to explore the underwater wonders.
We recommend Chewang Noi because our guests are usually looking for natural beauty, peace, and tranquility, but if you’re looking for the center of the action, by all means, check out Chewang as well!
