1. Flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui
Flying directly to Koh Samui’s Airport is the most convenient way to access the island with multiple flights going out of Bangkok on a daily basis.
The estimated travel time is about an hour, however prices usually hover around ~$125 depending on the time of booking, making it slightly more expensive than the other travel options.
2. Flight to Surat Thani + Ferry to Koh Samui
The second method involves flying to the nearest port for a ferry departing for Koh Samui which is located in Surat Thani.
The estimated total travel time is around 4-5 hours, however prices start at around $48 depending on the flights booked to Surat Thani, making this a relatively cheaper option which provides a reasonable traveling time as well.
3. Bus to Surat Thani + Ferry to Koh Samui
The third method involves a bus ride to Surat Thani, before boarding a ferry departing for Koh Samui.
This is the most cost effective option that would cost about $25 onwards, with a total combined travel time of around 11-14 hours. Depending on the bus, it can also be cramped which may lead to a more uncomfortable journey along the way to Surat Thani. We wouldn’t really recommend this option unless the timing + costs work well for your needs.
Conclusion
Finally, a bonus method of getting to the island is via train to Surat Thani before catching a ferry to the island. This method is the longest which requires 14-19 hours of traveling time, with prices starting around $33. One benefit of this method is that you are able to sleep on the train if you decide on an overnight journey which might be slightly more comfortable than the bus option.
